With the 2024 PBR Monster Energy Tour heating up as we head into the colder months, it's Caboolture's turn to host the best bull riders in the country, as we return to the Queensland State Equestrian Centre this weekend.
This weekend's marks the final qualifying event before Origin, it shapes up to be a massive two massive days of action as the PBR Australia season pushes toward the halfway mark in season 2024.
PBR Australia's Sean Walsh gives you some matchups to watch ahead of night one at the QSEC.
Matchups To Watch
Sam Woodall on AURR-1011 Houston Calling
(Ruhland Ranch Bucking Bulls)
2023 PBR Caboolture Event Buckle owner Sam Woodall is back in the Moreton Bay region to defend his title and kickstart what has been a lackluster 2024 to date.
The Victorian will be sharing the chute with a familiar foe in Houston Calling from the Ruhland Ranch pen, with the pair drawn together twice previously across the animal athlete's 16 PBRA trips.
The 2021 battle at the same venue went the way of the NSW Origin representative, taking the bull away from his hand for an 81.5-point marker.
Look for Houston Calling to come out around to the left and if Woodall can repeat history, look for him to notch his first score of 2024.
Tyson Smith on AUPW-28 Jack Sparrow (Peter Wallace)
A really good matchup on paper for both PBR stars here, with Tyson Smith on the bubble of Origin selection and a bovine that's yet to be covered on the PBRA circuit.
Smith is currently 2-from-14 on the season and sitting in 25th spot on the PBRA standings and will be wanting to push himself further up the rankings this weekend and gain a Blue shirt come June 8 at the BEC.
The Peter Wallace pen member Jack Sparrow has been impressive, never being taken deeper than the four-second halfway mark, and holds an average bull score of 41.63 points per out.
Look for the animal athlete to turn back in either direction, making Smith's work cut out for him, but if the Walcha, NSW cowboy can find the middle early, expect a nice score to open night one in Caboolture.
Lane Mellers on AUBK-222 Rifleman (BK Bucking Bulls)
This is a fantastic matchup on paper between two PBRA veterans, with Lane Mellers returning to the QSEC arena for the fourth year in a row and will be sharing the chute with Rifleman from BK Bucking Bulls.
After a hot start to 2024, which saw the Central Queenslander firmly inside the top 5, Mellers currently perched on a 7-out buckoff streak heading into Caboolture and will be looking to get some momentum to head into the PBR Origin period.
The experienced bovine will be appearing in his 2nd event of the season after bucking out twice in Toowoomba earlier in March, boasting an impressive resume to boot, with a 12/3 record so far in his PBR career.
Mellers will be looking for the animal athlete to continue his recent around to the right trip, which will be into his hand and gain a score to set himself up heading into night two on Saturday at the QSEC.
