The 2024 PBR Australia season gets underway this weekend at the South Australian mecca of Bull Riding, with the PBR circuit returning to Marrabel for the Touring Pro Division Event in the Clare Valley region.

With PBRA points up for grabs for the first time this season, riders and stock contractors alike will be keen to get the ball rolling into the new calendar year.

PBR Australia's Sean Walsh breaks down some matchups and key numbers to know ahead of all the action from the Marrabel Rodeo Grounds this weekend.

Matchups To Watch

Round 1

Jackson Field on Man Glitter (Morgan Cattle Co)

This shapes up to be a fascinating battle with young Townsville Cowboy Jackson Field coming into season 2024 currently sitting on a 20 out buckoff streak from the back end of last season, with his last qualified ride coming at the Great Western Hotel in May and is yet to reach the 80-point mark in the infancy of his PBR career to date.

On the other side of the equation, Morgan Cattle Co's Man Glitter has only been covered once in his four trips to date (Cody Heffernan's 87.5-point outing last March in Melbourne) with the low spinner holding an impressive average bull score of 42.17 and 2.58 second BOT.

Man Glitter's trips have been consistently clock-wise out of the chutes, which will be a tough assignment for the southpaw Cowboy away from his hand, but if he's able to find the whistle expect Field to find himself in a nice spot after Round 1.

Will Watson on Rough Justice (Woodall Rodeo Co)

PBR Veteran Will Watson returns to the PBR Australia scene after a gap year in 2023, with the Swan Hill, VIC rider sitting 12-from-58 (20.7%) across a ten year career on the circuit thus far and has never been able to find the whistle at Marrabel in 9 tries.

His dance partner for Round 1 is Rough Justice from the Woodall Rodeo Co, a bucking bull who has been around for a while now and currently uncovered in 6 outs to date, with one saving grace for Watson knowing that the bovine has taken past the halfway mark on four of those six rides, meaning you can take this bovine deep.

Rough Justice has a tendency to come out turning back to the right and into the hand of a right handed cowboy in which Watson is, so look for him to break the streak and give the bovine it's first career black mark.

Round 2

James Fels on Ghost Face (Woodall Rodeo Co)

Round 2 has got some intriguing Bovine/Cowboy battle earmarked and this one shapes up to be one of them, with this battle of two PBR young guns looking to prove they belong at the professional level.

Fels' is yet to reach the promised land on the PBR Australia tour in his very short one event, two out appearance in Melbourne last year and will be hoping to hear the whistle on Saturday Night.

Woodall Rodeo's Ghost Face is another great bull from their roster, having been uncovered in four trips thus far with an average bull score of 40.63.

The bovine seems to have settled into a nice rider friendly trip of turning back to the left out of the chute gates with minimal front jerking in his action and looks to be a nice one for Fels to take into his hand and open his Professional Bull Riders account.

Toby Collins on Crooked Intentions (Morgan Cattle Co)

2023 PBR Origin representative Toby Collins has drawn arguably the bull of the event in Crooked Intentions, who was extremely impressive during last years Melbourne Meatstock event.

Collins finished the 2023 season 1-from-7, successfully covering Hunk of Mud at Coonamble for an 82.5-point marker and booking himself a trip to the pay window.

The young bovine matched against the Maldon, VIC Cowboy from Morgan Cattle Co will be at his second ever PBR event and will be looking to continue a clean sheet with two buckoffs in Melbourne last season.

In the bull's two trips he's gone right once and left once, so look to Collins to try and dominate once Crooked Intentions' settles into his trip and aim to take his first qualified ride of 2024.
